Javier Fernández and Sonia Lafuente win the Spanish Figure Skating Championships again
Successful first ice test event of Universiada Granada 2015
Javier Fernández lived up to the expectations and won the Spanish Figure Skating, specially after his successful performance in the Short Program, although he stated he was not completely happy with it.
However, Sonia Lafuente was not so sure about her success, as she is not at her best this year. In fact, she took the second place on Saturday, so she had to try her best. And she did it indeed. Spectators in Granada Igloo venue saved the largest cheers of the day for her. This position in the Spanish championships will send her to the European championship, which will take place at the end of January in Sweden. The skater, born in the Canary Islands, has won the only place for Sweden.
European Championships will receive two male participants, and there is already one assigned. Javier Raya will be the one in Sweden. The skater, born in Madrid, did his best and stressed the high level of the rest of participants and said it was not easy to get the second rank.
However, Javier stated that he never underestimates a competition. “I always learn and that is the most important” -said the skater, born in Madrid. He also mentioned that was happy with his performance. “The program was a little more complex than Saturday’s one and I was feeling a little bit congested. I was shattered.”
Spectators in the Igloo were not disappointed. The stands were at its full capacity (1,500 seats) in the afternoon and performances were such a success. Granada showed its best face in this sport event, which will be the king sport during the Universiada (4th-14th February next year).
Besides figure skating, Granada Igloo will host the Short Track events. Ice Hockey competitions will take place in the Sports Palace and Mulhacen Pavilion. Curling will be held in the pavilion being built in Fuentenueva by the University.
